Effective Communication

This plenary session wraps up the day by focusing on the key skill that underpins all the workshops you’ve done today – effective communication.  We communicate all the time, so how come – often when it matters most – we mess it up?  This program brings together perspectives from psychology and management practice to demonstrate a range of powerful feelings associated with subtle changes in wording or style.  Our personal behaviours are strongly influenced by the way people communicate with us.   “I am responsible for the response I elicit”.  Topics for this program include:

Session topics: Active Listening; Communication styles; Communication tactics; The importance of ‘FACE’; Some questioning techniques that help avoid resistance; Influence of organisational culture and climate on communication; Influencing organisational culture and climate by communication

Systems thinking for each level

‘Systems Thinking’ is a valuable organisational skill that needs to occur at each organisational level. This session will explore how to identify, streamline and improve your workplace systems.

Session topics: Different systems – how they work; Making a simple ‘list system’ safer; Identifying those accidental systems – name the purpose and process; Making a ‘real’ system more effective and efficient; Helping systems talk better to each other – synchronising them; Convincing others that a system needs fixing.

Key Skills for Interviewing Staff

Managers encounter many different types of interviews – job interviews, discipline interviews, performance appraisal interviews and exit interviews. This session will dicuss the skills managers need to practice effective interviewing skills across a broad range of areas with both current and prospective staff.

Session topics: Decide purpose and develop your plan; Set the scene and remain objective; The power of the right questions; Active listening and observation; Take notes and keep records; Post interview analysis.
