Strategic Planning
It sounds logical. You know that specific behaviours lead to specific outcomes, so if you know the outcomes you want then all you need to do is plan to cause the appropriate behaviours. That’s called Strategic Planning - plan the organisation behaviours that cause certain outputs that are hoped to yield desired outcomes. It’s linear and sensible.
Trouble is - all the many researchers and investigators over the years have reported back - it doesn’t work, except in rare cases. There is zero and sometimes negative connection between strategic planning and organisational fortunes. But what about those rare cases where it does work?
Fortunately, using theory and the success stories, we have understanding of why it doesn’t work, and more research to show that if you learn how to do it right then it will work really well. The remedies are simple, but require changed habits and attitudes, and some updated skills.
