Organisation Alignment
Organisation alignment could mean the strategic alignment of the organisation to its market, and would be a very suitable undertaking. In effect, this is organisational alignment - looking outwards. The organisation purpose, goals and strategies must ‘fit’ its environment.
The term ‘Organisational Alignment’ is generally taken as being the mechanisms used to align the special efforts of many to the purpose and goals of the organisation. This view of organisation alignment is an inwards looking view.
- Point 1: There is no point in having perfect internal alignment if external alignment is out of whack. Internally the organisation could be perfectly aligned - to inappropriate goals.
- Point 2: It seems theoretically impossible to have external alignment if there is no internal alignment - there is no ‘organisation’ to align!
- Point 3: A worthwhile objective is therefore to align both - simultaneously - internally and externally. If you undertake to refine internal alignment, then it may also be worthwhile to undertake revision of the external alignment process.
- Point 4: Current understanding of terminology seems to regard organisation alignment as meaning internal alignment, and the external alignment as being strategic planning or strategic intent. It could help to tidy up these terms.
Who will benefit from
Any organisation that knows it can do better. Aligned organisations outperform others. People from organisations that undertake activities that are part of organisation alignment, are more satisfied and productive.
